Domaine Dalamara’s 2020 Paliokalias is a distinguished red wine from the Naoussa region of Greece, crafted exclusively from the Xinomavro grape. Sourced from the esteemed Paliokalias vineyard, this wine embodies the rich heritage and terroir of the area. The only intervention that is done is the addition of a very small amount of sulphur dioxide.
Tasting Notes:
The 2020 Paliokalias presents a medium ruby hue. Its aromatic profile is notably complex and captivating, featuring layers of tomato, red and black fruits, and spices. The intensity of these aromas persists even after several hours, inviting prolonged appreciation.
Vinification and Aging:
Domaine Dalamara employs traditional winemaking techniques, including organic viticulture practices, to produce Paliokalias. The wine undergoes fermentation with indigenous yeasts and is aged in oak barrels, enhancing its structure and aging potential. No yeasts, no enzymes, no filtration, no clarification etc. Aged in French oak barrels for 12 months. The tannins are significantly smoother than one could expect from this variety, thanks to the work Kostis Dalamara did on the selection of the grapes and on their phenolic maturity level. 800 cases made.
Aging Potential:
The 2020 Paliokalias is built for longevity. Paliokalias (meaning ‘Old Watch Point’) stylistically balances nicely between being modern and traditional with a very tight structure that permits the wine to age easily for 10-15 years. While approachable in its youth, cellaring this wine for several years will allow it to develop greater complexity and depth, rewarding patience with an enriched tasting experience.
